My artwork depicts how engineers contribute to a better world by visualizing some of the devices and systems that they have created to make our world a better place. This includes a plane, representing aircraft and travel; two wind turbines, representing clean energy; a grassy plain and a blueberry bush, representing agriculture; two buildings and a hemisphere (inspired by the Las Vegas sphere), representing infrastructure and shelter; and a flowing river, representing progress! It also includes digital applications (apps), from Mail to FaceTime to Youtube and everything in between, as well as the role they can play (digital alerts, SOS, 911, money transfer, communication, convenient online shopping). The water pipes, much like the river, represent innovation, movement (of ideas, goods, and people), and the infrastructure that brings essential hydration to billions around the world. To the left of the pipes are medical devices (x-rays, heart monitors, ambulances, etc) and security devices (security cameras, monitors, locks, a police car, etc). Lastly, the semi-transparent eyes at the very top represent the engineers, and they hold many different colors, representing the diverse group of people that made this all possible. Their placement in the sky shows that, for engineers, the sky isn’t the limit!

Engineering For A Better World

Hiawatha

I chose Hiawatha for his character and impact on American democracy. Firstly, he was able to turn his grief and mourning after his daughters were killed into consolation and compassion. When we lose the people we loved dearly, we often turn to vengeance, depression, and anger, yet I truly admire how Hiawatha was able to turn his suffering into a message of peace that would eventually bring harmony to the Haudenosaunee’s five warring nations. Secondly, he was essential to the establishment of democracy in North America. Without his contributions, the founders of the US would never be able to draw inspiration from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to establish principles such as unity and democracy in America.

I believe that true safety comes from not just people looking out for their own safety, but also from citizens helping each other (friends, family, and even total strangers) stay safe. So, that’s why, in my artwork, there are people helping each other (a girl catching her twin sister after she trips, an old man being assisted by a younger man) as well as people following rules and guidelines by themselves (including a woman with her headphones off and phone in her pocket). I want to bring that energy to the new Link rails in this way.

Stay Safe!
